Q: What are good strategies for Tree Farmers to ensure that their timber is acknowledged to be certified by their local mills?
A: When a Tree Farmer is preparing for a harvest, remind them to disclose their certification status to their forester and/or logger before harvest. Some best practices include listing the Tree Farm number in the harvest contract as well as on all of the load tickets when the logs are transported to the mill.
The mill will then use the ATFS Verification Database to provide confirmation of the status of any ATFS certified material during their chain of custody third-party audits.
